The oldest town in Germany – Let that sink in first…  

Medieval residential towers, half-timbered houses from the Renaissance, splendid buildings and the birthplace of Karl Marx the – you just read it, in Trier you will discover history in every corner.

As we did our little road trip from Colmar to Strasbourg and then Luxembourg, I saw the Porta Nigra when I was doing researches about Luxembourg and I couldn’t resist. It was 1 hours away from Luxembourg and voila, we just took the route to Porta Nigra. I know I wouldn’t get another chance to see this beauty in the next few years – so why not. Everything is an adventure and I don’t regret it. I’m so happy we could drive there and experience the beauty of Trier, the friendly people and the ambience of this old city.

It was a half day trip to Porta Nigra which was totally fine to see everything we wanted to see and to have breakfast.

The Porta Nigra is an earlier Roman city gate built from 170 AD and a symbol of the city of Trier. The name Porta Nigra comes from the Middle Ages. The inhabitants of Trier mostly refer to the gate as „Porta“.

As we walked down the streets, you could feel the medieval atmosphere taking you into their history.

The second interesting thing for me was that trier was the birth place of Karl Marx. His words are known as the world document heritage and he was famous for his political thinking.
